windows tools The Windows tools that I use

I am not a huge fan of windows, but it the operating system I have been running for the past 14 years (if you dont count college, or my current laptop… both were/are linux based). I have Windows Vista at home, and I have to use Windows XP at work.

Over the years, I have found programs that have worked for me. They have worked well, and helped me to get things done. I decided to make a list of the applications that I use on a rather regular basis. These are the things that I would for sure reinstall if my computer was to die tonight. Most of the software is free, and open source. As a result, many of the programs I am about to list also are available for Linux and Apple OSX. So here is the list of windows program that I love, in no particular order (expect Firefox, its at the top of the list)

My list is very similar to yours. One most valuable app that I have used for years is Total Commander. It is an outstanding file manager that puts Windows Explorer to shame.

I never got into firebird. I use outlook at work and gmail for everything else. gmail kills the spam. I love it.

Good software! Josh. I have some similar list of programs but in the case of Notepad++ I prefer to use Notepad2.

Nice Post.

Josh, how could you possible succumb to that eclipse CPU-cycle black hole? SciTE from the scintilla project is the most awesome editor out there! {http://scintilla.org/scite.html} Light weight and totally customizable. Unless you like your HTML editor to be using 80% of your system resources ;)

And don’t forget the new Opera browser. It’s like FireFox USED to be. Lean and mean. As much as I depend on FF with fireBug for development, my surfing is on Opera now. I got tired of all those “FireFox must close. Sorry for the inconvenience” errors when using FF with FB enabled on sites that have google ads…
